For several years I have promoted Norton as a great sharpening system.  Though I now consider Shapton to be the better of the two, Norton represents good value.  This system will provide an excellent edge on planes and chisels, the drawback is the flattening.  I promote rubbing two 1k stones together and then using either to flatten the finer stones.  This method does require skill to keep all the surfaces true.  Sand paper on float glass  is a good way to occasionally true each stone.  I recommend two 1k ( $48.95 ea.), stones, a 4k ($63.95) and an 8k ($97.95).

The shapton glass stone sharpening system represents the best sharpening method currently available.  I have used several methods over the years, the quest as been to find the method that does the best job in the shortest amount of time.  The key is the diamond lapping plate, it effectively removes the guess work out of flattening the stones.  While this kind of gear comes at a price, don't be put off, using this system will convince you of the value.  I recommend as a kit, the 1k, ($52.95) 4k, ($67.95) 8k, ($96.95) 16k ($119.95) stones along with the diamond lapping plate ($349.95).
