I always carry a jeweler's magnifying loupe in my sharpening kit for inspecting my blade edge.  With the loupe I can easily tell the quality of my blade's edge.  Did I remove all the 1000 grit scratches? Did I polish the whole length of the blade?  Did I grind out 100% of that nick in the blade?

I also reach for my loupes when I trying to identify difficult wood, looking at wood grain details, or finding that darn wood splinter in my finger!

So many folks have asked me where to get loupes I decided to carry them.  My good friend John the jeweler tells me these are high quality Jeweler's loupes.

Great accessory

Super helpful to visually inspect edges. Great for splinter removal from fingers too!

Antman

I use the loupe to inspect the cutting edge of my chisel and plane blades before and after sharpening. It makes me feel like Antman, zooming into a micro world where unnoticeable details to the human eye gain significance. I use it regularly. I know there are cheaper loupes on the internet, but I bought it as a memento when I attended Rob’s PHP training the hand workshop, and because I want to support Rob’s cause as much as I can. I think this is a 10x loupe, and if you decide to by a loupe with higher magnification you may have a hard time seeing the details because the higher the magnification the closer the loupe has to be to magnify the details. 10x already puts you within 2” if what you’re viewing. I’m considering a magnification visor of 2x as well, but those aren’t available through Robs shop.

Luv the loupe

Top ten, great for old eyes trying to learn proper sharpening plus other things you need to see a little closer.
