I own and recommend WoodRiver V3 planes. These planes are based on the reliable Stanley Bedrock design, are very well made, and have an excellent price point making them a "BEST VALUE."

The jointer plane (also known as a "try" plane) is used to straighten the edges of boards in the operation known as jointing and it can also be used to flatten the face of a board. Its long length is designed to 'ride over' the undulations of an uneven surface, skimming off the peaks, gradually creating a flat surface.

  • No. 7 Plane size: 2-7/8" W x 22" L with 2-3/8" W blade

  • Heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings.

  • Fully machined adjustable frogs bedded at a 45 degree angle.

  • Thick steel blade and chipbreaker dampens vibration making solid planing.

  • Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control.

  • Soles and sides are machined flat and square within tightly held tolerances.

Plane Preparation Service.  All planes require some preparation.  For a small fee we offer a complete plane preparation service, for one plane, so that no set-up is required by you. Your plane will be ready to use 'out-of-the-box!  (See Prep Service tab for what is included).

    Our Plane Preparation Service includes:

    • Chamfer / ease the edges of the plane.

    • Tune the lateral adjustment lever.

    • Remove all of the shipping grease.

    • Flatten the back of the lever cap.

    • Flatten and fit the chip-breaker to the blade.

    • Apply a back bevel and sharpen the blade.

    • Test the plane for proper operation and set-up.

    • Apply a light coat of Camellia oil to prevent rust.

"In my past life I was a tool maker. The workmanship for a production tool like this really impressed me. A quick sharpening and this plane was ready for use. I Just recently started using planes. I had a couple of big store planes that were very cheap and cut ok after a day of tuning/tweaking, but do not compare to the results I got with this plane."

"Outstanding Pla,ne.  I already had the #3, #4, #7 planes (all V3)and I was happy with them...the new 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 should be called the V3.5s. They are much improved. New size of tote fits larger hands better. The adjuster mechanism is much improved. I bought this WR 5 1/2 and a premium 4 1/2 by another company on the same day. The depth adjuster on the WR is absolutely better than the V3s and better than any other plane I own and I have and use tons of planes. Lastly, since I already have many vintage Jack planes, I chose the 5 1/2 on a whim to see how I'd like the size. For the last year, I've kept WR 5 1/2 under my bench because I use it constantly. I seldom touch the other Jacks anymore. Great product. I highly recommend this WR 5 1/2 plane and also the WR 4 1/2."

“I like to contribute reviews after the "honeymoon period" has worn off ... to that end this plane has been in use for over a year. I own 17 planes ... combination of Stanley (refurbished), L-N and Wood River. The Wood River planes came to my attention via Rob Cosman years ago and after picking up a #4 smoother to try I went on to purchase #3, #5, #6. I would match these against premium planes without hesitation ... in fact when speaking of performance why don't we just go ahead and put W R in the premium category. Are they usable right out of the box? ... no. But with minimal (and I do mean minimal) attention to the blade they are ready to go in minutes. I could go on and on but to sum it up I'd advise that if your on the fence deciding between W-R planes and the premium brands you are doing yourself a serious injustice if you don't grab a Wood River and just try it.”
