For over thirty years one of my most trusted dovetail tools has been my old red marking knife.  Taking the best of my old marking knife and adding some improvements, we have created the best knife for transferring tails to your pin board.  I think you will find this knife to be your missing link for transferring your tails to the pin board and cutting perfectly mating pins.

  • The knife body is made of metal and is surprisingly hefty.

  • Two piece body with space to store a second blade.

  • The rectangular handle will register in your hand to help you “feel” the blade's position.

  • Comes with our Straight Making Knife Blade and my .025 inch Thick Kerf Saw Tooth Blade.

  • .Replacement blades available.

Straight Marking Knife Blade:

  • This straight blade is designed for tracing tails onto the pin-board using traditional marking techniques.

  • Radius tip “track’s” in the end grain.

  • Wide at the blade tip for better registration against the tail.

.025 inch Thick Kerf Saw-Tooth Blade:

  • Designed specifically for use with my dovetail transfer technique.

  • Leaves a .025 inch thick kerf.

  • Designed to work with any dovetail saw that leaves a .025 inch -.026 inch thick kerf.
  • DOES NOT fit any Rob Cosman Dovetail Saw kerf.

Works every bit as well as his videos suggest

Brought my Shawn shim and saw tooth knife to my dad’s to show him how hand cut dovetails work. We were both kind of blown away that a gapless joint, right off the saw, was possible for two hacks up late on a Saturday night.

    ...forgot to mention

I use the 0.025" kerf blade with my Lie-Nielsen (0.026" kerf) and Tyzack & Turner (0.021" kerf) DT saws. The combination is perfect as long as you don't go too deep setting the initial kerf in hard woods. Let the kerf knife set the line and let the saw cut the pins.
Perhaps I'll get a second one for the finer saw

good hefty feel in the hand

I was pleasantly surprised by the heft of this knife, both the blade and the kerf blade are very stiff and well made. I have a number of marking knives scattered throughout the shop and I can see this one becoming a favorite.

I suppose it would be totally awesome if the extra blade could be stored in the handle...but maybe just getting a second one is a better option.

    Very Comfortable in the Hand

When I saw this marking knife, I thought, “That looks clunky and uncomfortable to hold.” However, I liked the idea of starting the kerf from the marking knife, so I decided to try it. I’m happy to report that my initial reaction to seeing the knife was wrong because it's incredibly comfortable to hold and well-balanced.

    Great tool

Adds a great deal of accuracy especially when using to mark for pins when cutting dovetails.
