Rob Cosman's Limited Edition Saws - Birdseye Maple Torrified

Product Description

For the discriminating woodworker who appreciates the beauty and craftsmanship of a saw handle crafted from unique species of select woods, I offer my Limited Edition Saw series.  These saws have the  same design characteristics and specifications as my Professional Saw series but I polish the brass backs to a much higher finish.

I love figured wood and I am always looking for pieces that will make stunning saw handles.  When I find a perfect piece of wood I create the handle from rough to finished.  Grain orientation is critical for strength, particularly in the narrow neck.  Since figured wood often has numerous flaws I have to carefully layout the handles to get the best yield.  When the handle is completed I post several photographs of it so you can see exactly what it looks like.  If you buy the handle on this page you are purchasing the handle you see in these pictures.  Once this handle is sold - it is gone.

If you want this handle, just select your desired saw model and I will personally build your Limited Edition saw.  An heirloom worthy to pass on for generations.

This handle is crafted from Birdseye Maple that has undergone torrefaction.  Torrefaction (sometimes called roasting) is the process of  heating wood to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen to prevent combustion.  Torrified wood has the advantage of being stable and very resistant to humidity and temperature changes.   Torrified Birdseye Maple takes on a toasty, chestnut color that enhances the birdseye figure.

Birdseye Maple is a figure that is occasionally found in Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) trees native to North America.  It has a distinctive pattern that resembles tiny, swirling eyes and thus the name "birdseye."  As the Sugar Maple attempts to start new buds poor growing conditions cause the new shoots to be aborted leaving tiny knots.  This birdseye condition creates a stunningly beautiful piece of wood which I craft into a spectacular Limited Edition Saw for you.

  • Specifications:  Please refer to Rob's Professional Saw Series product pages for the specifications for Dovetail, Crosscut, and Tenon saws.
  • Handle Size & Determining your Size : Our Limited Edition Saws only come with Regular size handles.  Follow these instructions to determine your proper handle size: While holding your fingers together (not your thumb!) measure the circumference around the widest part of your hand (typically around the knuckles located at the base of your fingers) with a tape measure and note the size. If your hand circumference is 6.5 inches (16 cm) to 9.5 inches (24 cm) you need a Regular size saw handle.  If your hand circumference is greater than 9.5 inches (24 cm) you need a Large size saw handle.

Torrefaction is a 100% natural prolonged heat treatment process that leaves wood amazingly stable and durable.

Torrefaction is not a new process. The Vikings were already using it to enhance the resistance and durability of wood back at the turn of the 8th century. Scandinavian countries have been improving this age-old procedure since the 1930s.

Here’s how it works:

1. Preheating and drying. First, the wood is gradually heated to approximately 130°C for about 20 hours. This process equalizes the woodl and lowers the moisture level to almost 0%.

2. Intensive Heat Treatment. The wood is then heated to about 200°C to 320°C (392 to 608ºF) under atmospheric pressure and in the absence of osygen (i.e. with no air) so as to prevent combustion. This process thermally modifies the woods molecular structure. This procedure has three effects:

  • It gives the wood a rich natural amber color.
  • The wood is much less subject to fluctuations in moisture levels, giving it unmatched stability and durability.
  • The wood has much greater resistance to decay and insects.

3. Cooling and Conditioning. The temperature is then gradually lowered. During this phase, the controlled addition of water vapor brings the moisture level of the wood back to 4% to 7%. This restores natural flexibility, making it easier to work with.
