Its very convienent to switch out marking gauge cutter sizes by just removing the rod with cutter attached and replacing it with a different size cutter attached to a rod.  Therefore, we offer our replacement cutters with rods.  These rods are designed to work with either a Cosmanized or a Rob Cosman marking gauge.  They should fit any marking gauge that accepts a 5/16 inch diameter rod, but we cannot guarentee that.

All of our cutters come pre-sharpened.  We sharpen these on a CBN grinding wheel which also flushes the face of the screw that holds the cutter to the with the face of the cutter.

We offer four different sizes of replacement marking gauge cutters with rods.  Each cutter is a different size and has different bevel angles so that you can use the right cutter for the right job.  Our rods come unmarked or etched with inch and milimeter markings.  See below for details:

  • 3/8 inch cutter with rod - 40 degree bevel (Best used for cleaning out mortises and sockets). Comes attached to a 5/16 inch diameter, 7 inches long, unmarked rod.  The cutter is attached to the rod with a 6-32 inch threaded end screw with a hex head.  Cutter head only fits a 6-32 inch threaded screw.

  • 1/2 inch cutter with rod - 25 degree bevel (Best used as a general purpose cutter in soft or hard woods).  Comes attached to a 5/16 inch diameter, 7 inches long, unmarked rod.  The cutter is attached to the rod with 6/32 inch threaded end screw with a hex head.   Cutter head fits both a 6/32 inch threaded screw and a 4 mm threaded screw.

  • 7/16 inch cutter with rod - 20 degree bevel (Best used for marking in soft woods). Comes attached to a 5/16 inch diameter, 7 inches long rod etched with inch and milimeter markings.  The cutter is attached to the rod with a 4 mm threaded end screw with a phillips head.   Cutter head fits a 6/32 inch threaded screw or a 4 mm threaded screw.

  • 5/8 inch cutter with rod - 35 degree bevel (Best use when marking for angled dovetails).  Comes attached to a 5/16 inch diameter, 7 inches long rod etched with inch and milimeter markings. The cutter is attached to the rod with a 4 mm threaded end screw with a phillips head.   Cutter head fits a 6/32 inch threaded screw or a 4 mm threaded screw.

just what i needed

the 5/8" cutter is great for those times when the distance uses most of the rod or when the wood is sloping away from the edge. buying the rod and cutter assembly makes changing cutter sizes a breeze.

Good tool, Great Customer Service

I had a project that was going to have a lot of parts and I needed an extra cutting gauge to help keep things moving along!
I ordered the cutting gauge and received it very quickly! The only problem was the delivery people, between Canada and New York, were Ex-airline baggage handlers and totally destroyed the container the marking gauge came in, resulting in the tool arriving in loose pieces!
The brass head was damaged and the cutter rod was loose, with the cutter beaten up and almost unusable!
I was able to lap out the damage to the brass body, but the cutter blade was toast! It looked like an alligator had taken bites out of the edges almost all around!
I contacted Rob and he sent a replacement cutter at no charge, even though it was not his fault!
Anyway, the cutter was good to go and I was able to use the gauge for my project!
It is a substantial piece of hardware with plenty of heft!
After being Cosmanized it works really well! The cutter head retracts into the brass body to keep it safe from alligators, and the wood and brass body is attractive and fits the hand well!
The cutter is sharp and will slice you up if you are careless!
The body has a relief cut on one edge that results in a flat on the brass body that keeps it from rolling off the bench!
The rod has measured markings in the rod, but they are impossible to see! But I always measure with a ruler and the project itself so that is not a problem for me!
The locking knob is brass and holds well, but you have to make sure it is tight so it doesn’t move!
All in all a good tool and fairly priced!
Thank you to Rob and his crew for a job well done!

Best layout tool!

The cutters are sharp and can be used in any gauge. The accuracy of these cutters make it easier to create a precise layout. I Use it every time I need to mark a straight line.
