Rob Cosman's Wood-Hinge Rod Kit: 1/16 inch
One of the keys to successfully making my wood-hinge box is using a hard enough rod for the hinge axle so that it will not deform when you cut it. Our rods are hardened metal that wont deform and come in two diameters: 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch.
The 1/16 inch diameter rods are used with 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch dowels. The 1/8 inch diameter rods are used with 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch dowels.
Our rod kits come in three different configurations:
1/8 inch Rod Kit: 3 x 6 inch segments of 1/8 inch diameter rod
1/16 inch Rod Kit: 6 x 6 inch segments of 1/16 inch diameter rod
Combination Rod Kit: 2 x 6 inch segments of 1/8 inch diameter rod and 4 x 6 inch segments of 1/16 inch diameter rod
Waiting on the 1/4” kit to get started
The first tools I bought from Rob were a dovetail saw, x10, dovetail knife, and marking gauge so I expected the crosscut saw and wood hinge kit to be perfect- and they were. I’ve used many handsaws and literally none of them cut or handle like a Cosman saw. If you’re on the fence about them get off the fence and buy one - they very nearly saw for you. So long as you don’t steer it too much the saws just find a straight plumb line. The other tools are all among the best of their kind I’ve used particularly the marking gauge which is so good I’ve actually used it to pare dovetail sockets on occasion. These are world class tools.
