US Brokerage Fees and Tariff Charges (Oct 2025)

Understanding Brokerage Fees and Tariff Charges

When you place an order on RobCosman.com that is shipped to a US-based address, additional costs called brokerage fees and tariff charges may apply to your order in addition to the price of the product and the shipping costs.  This page explains how brokerage fees and tariff charges are calculated and applied to your order.

What are Brokerage Fees?

Brokerage fees are charges imposed by commercial package carriers, commonly called "couriers" (e.g. UPS, FedEx, and others) for "brokering" parcels across international borders.  These fees cover:

  • Processing customs documentation.
  • Coordinating with customs authorities.
  • Ensuring the package is in compliance with import regulations.

What are Tariff Charges?

Tariff charges (also known as duty) are taxes imposed by a country's government on designated imported goods. These charges are:

  • Set by the local customs authority.
  • Generally based on the products type and country of origin.
  • Calculated as a percentage of the item's declared value.

How are these Charges Calculated for Packages Entering into the U.S.?

Brokerage Fees:

    1. Order values between $0-200 have a $6.50 Brokerage Fee.
    2. Order values between $201-800 have a $12 Brokerage Fee.
    3. Order values above $800 have a $17 Brokerage Fee.
    4. These brokerage fees apply to every package brokered into the U.S., regardless if it contains an item requiring tariff charges.

Tariff / Duty Charges

Whenever duty is owed on a package, the courier charges a flat $7 disbursement fee, regardless of the duty charge.  Duty on goods entering the U.S. is applied in the following manner:

    • If any item in an order requires a duty charge to enter the U.S., a $7 processing fee, plus half of cost of the tariff charge is applied to the order.
    • If two or more items in an order require a duty charge to enter the U.S., the $7 fee is only applied once, plus half the cost of the total tariff charges is applied to the order.

What Products are Subject to U.S. Tariffs/Duty?

Here at RobCosman.com we share the costs of tariff charges with our U.S. customers, by absorbing half of the charge. All products in our store have either a "No US Duty" logo and are duty free, or have a "US DUTY %" logo indicating the duty rate we will be charging you at checkout.

How These Charges Are Applied

At checkout, our system provides customers with a real-time, itemized price on all charges (product price, shipping costs, brokerage fees, and tariff charges, if any). Of note, only 25% of the products we sell require tariff charges. We handle the paying all of the brokerage fees and tariff charges on your behalf, no additional charges are due upon delivery to any US address.

Important Notes

  • Occasionally our commercial carrier will make an error and require payment of these charges on delivery, but please do not pay these charges as they have already been paid on your behalf. Reject the charges and contact us.
  • The removal of the DeMinimus exemption requires a significant amount of additional processing to ship a package to the U.S.  Rob Cosman woodworking is absorbing 100% of these additionl processing costs.
  • This is a fluid situation and changes are imminent. This page remains the authority as it relates to Robcosman.com's handling of the process.
