A Moxon Vise, named after Joseph Moxon (who described the vise in his book titled Mechanick Exercises), is a great vise, and best of all it is easy to build yourself. A Moxon vise is especially useful for cutting dovetails and sawing because it holds the material rock solid, and the middle of the vise is not obstructed by vise hardware. All you need is some 8/4 hardwood for the jaws and our "Cosmanized" hardware kit to make whatever vise size to best suit your needs.
We "Cosmanize" the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit by adding two vise springs, two self-lubricating bushings, two revolving knobs, drilling and tapping a hole in each of the wheels for mounting the revolving knob, and providing a strip of cork-rubber to line the jaw with. These additions take the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit to the next level.
Haven’t installed it yet as I have a few commissions from a Customer to finish before I tackle this kit. I bought it liking the updates or tweaks that Rob and company thought of from what is probably real world experience over some years using the unaltered kits first.
I've been toying with the idea of building versus buying a Moxon vise. I carefully looked at the likes of Lie Nielsen, Benchcrafted, etc. I decided I wanted to build one out, at least once, so went with purchasing the hardware. After review of hardware only options, the decision was to go with the Cosmanized Woodriver hardware- which was a hard choice because I do not like to support business in the far east (Chinese manufacturing). However, this was a good compromise because Rob's team was involved, and brought some business to the NA continent- and it's a great time to support our Canadian friends. I did have to carefully watch Rob's build video a couple times to get the general layout and considerations down on paper. Once I had the chops milled and finished, the actual hardware install was very quick. The vise works extremely well, and I am very pleased with this choice.
Overall, it's a solid product and Rob's uogrades were a huge benefit so I'm glad I purchased this instead of the off the shelf version. The vise operation is incredibly smooth and no doubt it will last a lifetime.
I do wish it included modified instructions with the kit, just a one pager highlighting the differences in this custom installation vs. the standard kit. I drilled my holes per the included instructions only to find later that those holes wouldn't fit the bearings and springs. I was able to enlarge the holes after the fact so everything worked out fine, it just took a little extra work to enlarge the holes so that everything was perfectly aligned. And yes, it is explained in his video which I should have watched first but I'm like a kid with a new toy, just rip the box open and get to it!! We're also like longer handles on the wheels, but that's just a minor detail. All in all, it's still a Five Star product.
I will definitely keep Rob's site at the top of my list when looking for products or some of his exemplary guidance and wisdom.

This is a great addition to my shop. Extremely happy with the purchase and the “Cosmanized” items definitely make it a better product. I tried a couple other types of vises but they just weren’t compatible with my already-built work bench. This one is perfect.
