Rob Cosman's IBC Mortise Chisel: 1/2 inch
Determined to design a better mortise chisel, IBC and I teamed up and developed what I consider to be the best woodworking mortise chisel on the market today. These chisels meet all five criteria of a great mortise chisel: comfortable, high quality steel, sides square to the back (+/- .0015 of an inch accuracy), flat back, and the ability to change handles.
- Size: Mortise chisel handle length: 3.87 inches. Mortise chisel total length: approximately 9 inches. Mortise chisel blade length, including the tang is approximately 6 inches. Blade width: 1/2 inch, blade height: 1/2 inch.
Handle: Cherry handle is turned precisely on a lathe so they fit nicely to the ferrule and end cap and have a butter smooth surface. Shaped for a comfortable grip in the hand, they are finished with four coats of tung oil.
Steel: Made from AISI High Vanadium A2 tool which holds an edge beautifuy. Fully stress relieved, triple tempered, cryogenically treated and hardened to 60-62 HRC. Primary bevel is ground to 30°.
Flat Back. Each chisel is tested on a granite reference surface to ensure the back us flat to within .0005 of an inch.
Design: The blade tang extends through a hardened steel ferrule and into a threaded hardened steel core that is inserted through the center of the wood handle and is securely attached to an aluminum striking cap. This design allows you to easily replace the standard cherry handle with your own custom turned wood handle.

First purchase IBC
I have a set of LN chisels and needed mortise chisels. They are out of stock so I went with IBC. This is a top quality chisel and I like the way the handle is attached, as opposed to LN socket type. Flattening the back of the chisel went well and it came to a high polish with the amount of effort I expected. I have not used the chisels yet, but I expect they will perform well.
I like all the IBC chisels I have purchased in RobCosman.com they are such a wonderful tool. Couldn’t be happier
Excellent tool, real quality product
Purchased this a few weeks ago snd just had a chance to use it, this mortise chisel is quality tool. Sharp on arrival, however it requires a bit more sharpening for a nice edge. Made with plenty of heft, it is more than up to the task of heavy blows to cut through hardwoods. I will definitely purchase another.
I have been looking for a chisel like this for a long time. Sadly because of manufacturing restrictions it’s been really hard to find them what is chisel without a tape or in the blade. I really wanted one without a taper because I found it much easier to steer than one with it. I could not have been happier with this chisels performance and highly recommend it to anyone that is looking into getting a good quality tool. If you know you were going to be doing chisels by hand you need to get this chisel
