One of the most difficult tasks in hand cutting dovetails is accurately transferring the tails and precisely sawing the pins.  Rob's improved method of transferring tails to the pin board by offsetting the tailboard by the thickness of the saw kerf takes all the guess work out of where to saw.

Offsetting by the exact thickness can be challenging, but the Shawn Shim helps improve your offset accuracy.  The brainchild of one of our Purple Heart Project alumni, we named the shim in honor of him.

Precisely milled to work with our regular dovetail saw, which requires a kerf thickness of .024 inches. The regular Shawn Shim has four different offsets to allow you to tighten or loosen the fit of the dovetails as needed.

  • CNC milled from solid brass.
  • 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch wide.  1-1/2 inches tall.
  • Four offset sides: .023, .024, .025, .026 of an inch thickness.
  • Offset amount engraved on each end of the shim.
  • Weight: 100 grams
  • Made in Canada.

    Great little tool

Who knew such an unassuming little piece of brass could help make cutting dovetails so accurate! Brilliant concept, well-made. YT videos are fine, but a small enclosed document of instructions would be a welcome addition.

    Nice tool

I haven’t yet used the shim, but it is well made and comes in a well thought out and safe box for transportation.
I know we can watch the YT videos, but some instructions with photos to explain might be useful as well.

Another quality product from the Cosman shop

The Shawn Shim sites proudly with many other tools from Robs shop. Never had one complaint with anything. Overall, they helped my wood working journey and helped make me as a woodworker, that much better!

Brilliant idea. Much easier to mark the offset for a good dovetail fit.
