The modern combination square was invented in the late 1870s by American inventor Laroy Starrett and is a multi-purpose measuring and marking tool that is virtually indispensable to today's hand tool woodworker.  If you can only get one square, make it a combination square.

Combination squares are the "Jack of all" squares because they can be used for  referencing 90° and 45° angles, verifying if a surface is level or an edge is plumb (vertical), and measuring depth or height.  Its sliding rule can be used to transfer dimensions without needing to take a measurement and it can be used to mark lines parallel to an edge by setting the head to a certain distance from the end of the rule.
