The blade is sharpened with a secondary and a tertiary bevel. The tertiary bevel's cutting edge is polished up through 16,000 grit on a Shapton glass stone.
A back bevel is applied to the blade's back and then is polished with a 16,000 grit Shapton glass stone.
Looking for an example
Frustrated with the quality control of blades lately and the difficulty of setting up, I ordered a prepped set up assuming they wouldn’t dare send Rob irons that weren’t up to spec.. Boy was it a pleasure to put into my 5 1/2 and start shaving away. Chip breaker making nice contact all the way across, flat back. My only disappointment was that it only has a secondary bevel. I was hoping to see an example in hand of a proper sharpening. It did set me straight though on one part as I was making the secondary and especially the tertiary bevels way to big. As a beginner, I’d definitely recommend getting a prepped set up. Once you’ve seen how to do it right, you can take care of your other planes yourself. Heck, if you are only using the 5 1/2, you now have two setups and can sharpen half as often.
Wood River Replacement Blade
Rob says you need to know what sharp is before you can sharpen a blade yourself. Well now I Know. Once installed in my 5 and a half I was able to get beautiful paper thin shavings. Came packaged great and ready to go. Gonna take practice for me to get a blade this sharp. Would recommend it whole heartedly
Crazy good job!!!
I’ve never used a hand plane before but, I stepped up and bought a set of WoodRiver planes. I’ve been watching Rob and the crew for about a yr. particularly his sharpening videos. I bought the prepared blade to have a reference and have attempted to sharpen original blades(still working on mastering that). I decided to put the prepped blade in and OMG!!! Never felt wood that smooth!! Might have to order some other sizes. Thanks guys!!!
An Educational Purchase
The reason I bought this was to be able to compare what is sharp to my own sharpening. As that benchmark, with watching Rob’s videos on sharpening, this product really gave me an understanding of the nuances that o was missing and validated for me what I was doing right. For that reason alone this purchase was well worth it! I’m sure if I pop it into my plane it will work stupendously but for now it’s the example I use to make sure I get my plane blade right. I would recommend this to anyone who is just starting to sharpen their own blades as it goes a long way to showing you what sharp looks like and along with Rob’s videos showing you how to get there
