Sorry, our agreement with Woodcraft restricts us from shipping WoodRiver Planes to the U.S.

We highly recommend WoodRiver V3 planes. These planes are based on the reliable Stanley Bedrock design, are very well made, and have an excellent price point making them a "BEST VALUE."  We offer our WoodRiver planes with either our standard “Preparation service” or our premium “Cosmanized service.”  Either way, our planes, unlike the vast majority of planes you can buy, are 100% ready to use out of the box (see below for details).

Jack planes are general-purpose bench planes, typically with bodies between 13 and 16 inches long.  As the name implies they are a "jack of all trades" and can perform most of the work of a smoother and on small and medium stock can perform as a jointer plane.

Rob uses his WoodRiver No. 5-1/2 Jack plane for 90% of his hand plane operations.  As he says, “It is my ‘go to’ plane” and we recommend it as your first plane purchase.

Plane Description

  • No. 5-1/2 Plane size: 14-15/16 inches (379 mm) long x 2-7/8 inches (86mm) wide with a 2-3/8 inches (60mm) wide blade.
  • Heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings.
  • Fully machined frog bedded at a 45-degree angle.
  • The frog can be adjusted without having to remove the blade.
  • Thick (.125 inch / 3mm) steel blade and chipbreaker which dampens vibration.
  • Rockwell 58-62 hardness blade.
  • Lightly finished Bubinga handles provide comfort and control.

Plane Preparation Service.  Our plane preparation service makes it so that no setup is required by you. Your plane is ready to use out-of-the-box!  Our plane preparation service includes:

  • Flattening the sole to within +/- 0.0015 of an inch (0.038mm) of perfectly flat.
  • Squaring the sides to within +/- 0.0015 of an inch (0.038mm) of 90 degrees to the sole.
  • Flattening the bottom of the rear handle (tote) and its boss so they mate properly with no movement.
  • Chamfering / easing all edges of the sole of the plane.
  • Tuning the lateral adjustment lever so it moves freely.
  • Applying a back bevel (Charlesworth ruler trick) to the back of the plane blade.
  • Sharpen the blade using micro-bevels. Final polishing is done using 16,000 grit ceramic waterstone.
  • Flattening the back edge of the lever cap so it mates properly to the chipbreaker.
  • Flattening the leading edge of the chipbreaker so it mates properly to the blade.
  • Testing the operation and set-up of the plane.
  • Removing all of the shipping / packing grease and applying a light coat of camellia oil to all the metal surfaces to prevent rust.

Cosmanized Plane Service.  Includes all the elements of the plane preparation service described above, plus:

  • All common screws (frog adjustment screw, frog retaining screws, lever cap screw, and chip-breaker screw) are replaced with hex head screws for positive connection when making adjustments.
  • The blade adjustment knob is replaced with a Rob Cosman AdjuStar for ease in turning.
  • The left or right side of the plane (#5, #5-1/2, #6, and #7 ONLY) is pre-drilled to accept Rob Cosman’s hand plane shooting grip (the grip must be purchased separately).
  • Right hand planes are prepared for use on the right side of a shooting board.  Left hand planes are prepared for use on the left side of a shooting board.

An absolute joy to use, oozes quality and works like a dream

After 30 years of carpentry and joinery using mostly cordless and power tools I took the plunge and bought the Cosmanized 5 1/2 along with the shooting board grip for my first bench plane and I haven't looked back.
The plane arrived to Scotland customized, prepared and honed to perfection straight out of the box. Took maybe 2 minutes once I got to my bench to produce shavings equal to the one supplied with the tool as promised and that's with little to no real experience of hand planes other than my trusty old block plane. I now spend 10 minutes every morning taking perfect shavings before I start work just for fun regardless of whether I need the plane that day or not, it's pure therapy.
5 Stars doesn't cover it, I'd give it a hundred if I could with zero regrets.
This tool along with Rob's advice will take your woodworking to the next level and from my own experience will likely give you the biggest smile you've had in years at the bench.

    My first serious plane

This is a high quality plane and was tuned to perfection when I picked it up. I also got a personalized tour of the Ron Cosman operation. Thank you Rob!

    New purchase

I purchased the 'cosmanized' version. I wasn't sure the end result would be worth the extra cost, but I am now convinced. Using it in my shooting board, it cuts maple like butter. Excellent product!

Game changer plane. I held off on making a shooting board till I got this plane. I made one for 90 and 45 degree miters. Perfect corners every time. Well wort the extra couple of dollars to get it ready to use right out of the box. The upgraded star adjuster wheel is awesome. I took the plane apart and seen how they prepared the iron and put it back together and was shocked to see how easily it shaved the wood. I resharpened all my other tools and will always have shap tools in seconds.
The finish and feel of this plane is going to be hard to beat at price.
