The Woodriver gauge is well built, with significant heft for a tool its size, and a beautiful turned collar. The biggest improvement that's important to me is the addition of a flat spot on the head. The day I was expecting this to be delivered, I had my old gauge roll off the bench while doing some work! My friend tried this gauge when it arrived and he basically said, "Wow... that's significantly better than the old one!"

I debated about my purchase as I have a few other marking gauges, but had a project coming up that was going to require a lot of different processes. So! I sprung for this tool, based on other tools I have bought from Rob, and am happy I did! The ability to change out different sized cutters based on the materials is very handy.
The body of the tool is wood and brass and is very hefty! Adjustment is easy, and the brass head, having the edge squared, does not roll off the bench!
The only fly in my ointment was the heavy handed UPS delivery people!
My gauge arrived damaged, with the box in good condition, but the shipping tube smashed apart and the tool rolling around in the box! I was able to repair some damage to the brass head, but the cutter that would have been tightly attached to the rod was loose and looked like an alligator chewed on it!
I contacted Rob regarding the cutter, as it couldn't be fixed, and he immediately sent me a new cutter, with apologies for the damage that was caused!

When I took the gage out of the box and loosened the shaft to set the depth I noticed that there was a lot of rust stains on the shaft where it had been under the head. Some sandpaper removed some of it but there is still some stains. Seems like a wipe with some oil would have prevented this.

Gage, exquisitely sharp, highly recommend!

I like the fit and finish of this marking gauge. And I know if I set it down on the bench it has less chance to end up on the floor broken. Later I would like to get some other rods and blades to go with this. But for now this really suits my needs.
