I discovered this 3M automotive refinish masking tape and its really wonderful stuff. I call it super painter's tape because it's thicker and sticks better than ordinary blue or green painter's tape, yet it still peels off easily without leaving any residue or marring the surface. Its very stretchy so you can pull and manipulate the tape around corners without tearing.
I use it as a substitute for cutting a rabbet on the tailboard of my dovetails, as a clamp when applying edge banding (just stretch the tape around the edge banding), and as a clamp to hold together small miter cornered boxes.
