The Cosman Workbench Vise Jaw is designed for the Cosman Workbench Vise and is also compatible with most vises currently on the market.
The vise jaw is milled from a single piece of North American Hard Maple and measures 20 inches (508mm) long by 3-1/8 inches (80mm) wide by 2-1/4 inches (57mm) thick. A 1/8-inch (6mm) taper is milled across its face. 2-5/16 inches (58.7mm) at one end and 2-3/16 inches (55.6mm) on the other end.
The jaw is installed in the Cosman Workbench Vise with the thickest part of the taper toward the open end of the vise. In this position, the thickest section contacts the workpiece first, holding it in place as the rest of the jaw engages when the vise is tightened.
A sheet of 1/8-inch (6mm) self-adhesive "crubber," a cork-and-rubber material, is included for lining the inside face of the jaw. It improves grip while securely holding the workpiece and protecting its surface.
The jaw is supplied with its upper and lower outside edges rounded over. You mill the jaw to the final height needed to match your workbench top. Then position it in the vise with the thickest end of the taper toward the vise opening, whether configured for left- or right-handed use, and with the remaining rounded edge at the lower outside edge. This rounded edge allows the jaw to fit tightly and securely against the vise when attached.
Drill dog holes sized for your bench dogs and aligned with the dog-hole strips in your workbench. Mount the jaw to the vise with seven #10 x 1-1/4-inch (32mm) flat-head, coarse-thread wood screws (not included).
