A Moxon Vise, named after Joseph Moxon (who described the vise in his book titled Mechanick Exercises), is a great vise, and best of all it is easy to build yourself. A Moxon vise is especially useful for cutting dovetails and sawing because it holds the material rock solid, and the middle of the vise is not obstructed by vise hardware. All you need is some 8/4 hardwood for the jaws and our "Cosmanized" hardware kit to make whatever vise size to best suit your needs.

We "Cosmanize" the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit by adding two vise springs, two self-lubricating bushings, two revolving knobs, drilling and tapping a hole in each of the wheels for mounting the revolving knob, and providing a strip of cork-rubber to line the jaw with. These additions take the WoodRiver Moxon Vise kit to the next level.

Product Details:
  • Moxon hardware only (Kit DOES NOT include wooded jaws).
  • 2 x 5 inch hand wheels.
  • 2 x 3/4 inch x 8 inch long acme threaded screws.
  • 4 x Acme threaded nuts with washers.
  • 2 x 3 inch long jaw opening springs (compressed spring length is 3/4 inch).
  • 2 x revolving knobs.
  • 2 x 3/8 inch long bronze self-lubricating bushings.
  • 4 x 24 inch long cork / rubber self-adhesive strip.
  • General instructions for making the traditional style Moxon Vise.

Very Solid Product; Quick Shipping; Highly Recommend

The "Cosmanized WoodRiver Moxon Vise Hardware Kit" is very high quality and I highly recommend it.*** The hand wheels are heavy and solid -- which helps them spin easily. The additions of both the turning knobs and springs are inspired. The springs, especially, fix an issue of getting the jaws open while holding tools and work pieces.

The shipping was quick and tracking information appreciated. Finally, I liked the customer service call and follow up. Good luck with this product ... it should fly off the shelves.

*** We have built moxon vises with both the Benchcrafted and Cosman kits. They are comparable and both product a fine tool.

Moxon vice kit in the U.K.

This is a really good kit of parts - worth the wait/import charges for it to come to the U.K.
It builds into a very useful addition to the workbench and I highly recommend it.
Ideally, make the oilite bushing a firm 1” press fit into the jaw and don’t drill a 1” hole all the way through the front jaw (like I did in my excitement to finish it) - leave a small 3/4” shoulder for the spring to press against. If only I’d watched the video first.
One handle came un-tapped for the small knob but it’s just a 2 minute job with a 1/4” unc (I think) tap to fix this.
Keep a block of wood spare to make a support for pieces when transferring tail cuts to the pin board.
Apologies for the photo of my very messy workshop.
    Highly recommended .

    Great hardware kit!

Solid, well made components. Took a bit to figure out where to put what size holes, it's a bit of a head scratcher at times but I got there. Clamping a jaw to the drill press table greatly facilitates concentric holes that you need in several spots, as does keeping a reference edge against a fence. Works real well, very happy. The "Cosmanized" version is well worth the extra dough; the handles are a must, as are the springs.

Rob, really did make the best version!!

I decided to build mine into the bench. Made with Walnut and Ash. My table is 3" MDF, So I fastened 5" lag bolds through the back of the vise into the work bench base. The directions in the box, are not as intuitive as Robs video. So follow his video if you choose to build one. It always nice to have Robs voice in the background in the shop lol
