Determined to design a better mortise chisel, IBC and I teamed up and developed what I consider to be the best woodworking mortise chisel on the market today.  These chisels meet all five criteria of a great mortise chisel: comfortable, high quality steel, sides square to the back (+/- .002 of an inch accuracy), flat back, and the ability to change handles.

Product Details:

  • Size:  Mortise chisel handle length: 3.87 inches. Mortise chisel total length: approximately 9 inches. Mortise chisel blade length, including the tang is approximately 6 inches. Blade width: 1/4 inch, blade height: 3/8 inch.
  • Handle: Cherry handle is turned precisely on a lathe so they fit nicely to the ferrule and end cap and have a butter smooth surface.  Shaped for a comfortable grip in the hand, they are finished with four coats of tung oil.

  • Steel:  Made from AISI High Vanadium A2 tool steel which holds an edge beautiful.  Fully stress relieved, triple tempered, cryogenically treated and hardened to 60-62 HRC.  Primary bevel is ground to 30°.

  • Flat Back.  Each chisel is tested on a granite reference surface to ensure the back is flat to within .0005 of an inch.

  • Design: The blade tang extends through a hardened steel ferrule and into a threaded hardened steel core that is inserted through the center of the wood handle and is securely attached to an aluminum striking cap.  This design allows you to easily replace the standard cherry handle with your own custom turned wood handle.

  • Made in Canada

IBC Chisels Are Premier Tools

I recently purchased 1/4" and 1/2" IBC mortise chisels and I have to say - I am thoroughly impressed. My order arrived well packaged in a timely manner. The tool's design, materials, and machining are first rate. These chisels feel like they belong in your hand and, after a proper sharpening, perform exactly as you would expect from a tool at this price point. Are they expensive? Yes, but they're heirloom tools. And I consider it good money to good people with a good product and a good cause.

Mortise Chisel - Excellent!

Nothing beats this mortise chisel. It's almost miraculous the way it cuts accurately and lifts the chiseled wood pieces out. An excellent hand tool!

Best mortise chisel

I recently used a Rob Cosman 1/4 inch mortise chisel at his Train the Hand workshop in June 2025. Worked great, good balance and the cherry handle was so comfortable to hold on to. Great job to Rob and his team.
