Rob Cosman's IBC Mortise Chisel: 1/4 inch
Determined to design a better mortise chisel, IBC and I teamed up and developed what I consider to be the best woodworking mortise chisel on the market today. These chisels meet all five criteria of a great mortise chisel: comfortable, high quality steel, sides square to the back (+/- .0015 of an inch accuracy), flat back, and the ability to change handles.
- Size: Mortise chisel handle length: 3.87 inches. Mortise chisel total length: approximately 9 inches. Mortise chisel blade length, including the tang is approximately 6 inches. Blade width: 1/4 inch, blade height: 3/8 inch.
Handle: Cherry handle is turned precisely on a lathe so they fit nicely to the ferrule and end cap and have a butter smooth surface. Shaped for a comfortable grip in the hand, they are finished with four coats of tung oil.
Steel: Made from AISI High Vanadium A2 tool which holds an edge beautifuy. Fully stress relieved, triple tempered, cryogenically treated and hardened to 60-62 HRC. Primary bevel is ground to 30°.
Flat Back. Each chisel is tested on a granite reference surface to ensure the back us flat to within .0005 of an inch.
Design: The blade tang extends through a hardened steel ferrule and into a threaded hardened steel core that is inserted through the center of the wood handle and is securely attached to an aluminum striking cap. This design allows you to easily replace the standard cherry handle with your own custom turned wood handle.
- Made in Canada
Construction issue: Top of Hickory handle and striking cap
The top of the hickory handle is smaller circumference than the circumference of the striking cap and the pieces are not centered when mated together. Somewhat disappointed as all my other purchased from RobCosman.com have been exceptional.
Great chisel so far. Opened a few paint cans with it. . Kidding of course, relax. Still learning some wood joinery and it sure helps when you have a tool that is comfortable in the hand and easy to use. John.
Heirloom quality tool.
This chisel not only works well in my hand, it looks great in the rack on the wall over my bench. I could not be happier. I am always thanked for my purchases, I even received a call from Rob after my first purchase. Who does that anymore? Canadians, that’s who. Happy woodworker in Toledo.
The chisels both had a belly 1/4 in. wasn't to bad but the larger 7/16 took way to many hours of flattening to get it out so, I do plan on getting a few more but if there's a belly ill exchange it from the get go . Jake was more than helpful though and I will not hesitate to buy any of there products .
Very impressed with the tool. Well balanced, great finish, and an all round pleasure to use. Shortly after I ordered the chisel I received a call from Rob himself thanking me for my purchase and letting me know that my order had shipped. That small gesture really went a long way. Just ordered my 3/8in and 1/2in mortise chisels. Keep up the great work
