The specialized triangular grid pattern, made from small blue dots, simplifies the process of making realistic 3D shapes.   The pattern is printed on a heavy duty and very bright white paper making things easy to see.  The non-photo / non-reproducible blue dots remain invisible in most scanners with low density black and white scans.
