The second most important tool in cutting dovetails is your marking gauge.  The gauge line becomes part of the finished joint.  Here is why I think my marking gauge will help you cut better dovetails:

  • The blade comes to you sharpened; designed to sever the wood fibers not crush them, leaving a crisp gauge line.

  • The blade is fixed in use but can be rotated to a sharper area when it gets dull.  You can do this several times before having to resharpen.

  • Has a flat section on the brass head preventing the gauge from rolling off of your bench.

  • The face of the head is dead flat, making for precise work.

  • Has a large knurled locking knob that is easy to tighten.

  • Comes standard with the 1/2" diameter cutter head.

  • Extra cutter heads available in 3/8", 7/16", and 5/8" diameters.

  • The handle is crafted form the same Ebony Swanstone composite material as our saw handles.

  • Other species of wood handled marking gauges are occasionally available in limited manufacturing runs.  You can see these limited edition marking gauges by clicking HERE.

Might be an anomaly.

In general, I’m quite pleased with this gauge, particularly the refined brass and black body. To my surprise however, my particular gauge blade was sharpened off kilter, enough that if the gauge was rotated it would make a line slightly off of the original mark. I’ve take care of it, but to correct the problem required a collet chuck in a lathe and a custom sharpening set up. Far too much effort for the price of this gauge. I imagine a phone call and some patience would have resulted in them swapping out the blade for a properly sharpened one, but I am inherently an impatient consumer. Other than this, it has worked wonderfully and is an attractive addition to my hand tool collection (and let’s not kid ourselves, if I wasn’t interested in the aesthetic I could just keep using my much less expensive Woodriver gauge with identical results).

This is my second one. I also have a few Cosmanized Woodriver gauges. These are much more comfortable to use. And the shape enhances micro adjusting them with one hand.

The best marking gauge

I’ve had another Canadian wheel marking gauge for about eighteen years. Just purchased this one from Rob and the difference is amazing. The way it comes to hand, the shear mass and size of the head and the ease of use make it perfect. And of course it cuts a perfect line in the workpiece. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.
