Shawn Shim Dovetail Offset Tool
One of the most difficult tasks in hand cutting dovetails is accurately transferring the tails and precisely sawing the pins. Rob's improved method of transferring tails to the pin board by offsetting the tailboard by the thickness of the saw kerf takes all the guess work out of where to saw.
Offsetting by the exact thickness can be challenging, but the Shawn Shim helps improve your offset accuracy. The brainchild of one of our Purple Heart Project alumni, we named the shim in honor of him.
Precisely milled to the four most common saw kerf thickness, the Sean Shim allows you to precisely offset the tailboard.
- CNC milled from solid brass.
- 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch wide. 1-1/2 inches tall.
- Four offset sides: .023, .024, .025, .026 of an inch thickness.
- Offset amount engraved on each end of the shim.
- Weight: 100 grams
- Made in Canada.
Just easier in every way than using a marking gauge. Nicely machined, solid feel in the hand, easy to hold. Inspires confidence.
Love this new tool. While Rob's method of off setting with a marking gauge works great for me, this Shawn Shim is an awesome time saver!
This simple tool makes the tail transfer a lot more easier than using a marking gauge. The weight feels good and it has a very nice finish.
A lot easier than trying to hold the saw along the edge. Easy to read. Works! Now if it could just get me to saw straight... :-)
Its great little device, Saves setting up another marking gauge, I have marked the side which suites my dovetail saw to save time looking at which side to use. Thumbs up on this one
