For over thirty years one of my most trusted dovetail tools has been my old red marking knife.  Taking the best of my old marking knife and adding some improvements, we have created the best knife for transferring tails to your pin board.  I think you will find this knife to be your missing link for transferring your tails to the pin board and cutting perfectly mating pins.

  • The knife body is made of metal and is surprisingly hefty

  • Two piece body with space to store a second blade.

  • The rectangular handle will register in your hand to help you “feel” the blade's position.

  • Comes with both our Marking Knife Blade and our Regular and our 3/4 Saw Tooth Blades.

  • .Replacement blades available.

Marking Knife Blade:

  • This straight blade is designed for tracing tails onto the pin-board using traditional marking techniques.

  • Radius tip “track’s” in the end grain.

  • Wide at the blade tip for better registration against the tail.

Regular Saw-Tooth Blade:

  • Designed specifically for use with my dovetail transfer technique.

  • Made of the same blade material as my regular Dovetail Saw, .024 inch thick kerf.

  • Regular Saw Tooth Blade has 22 TPI so it fits into the kerf easily.
  • Allows you to "saw" a starting kerf in the pin-board.

3/4 Saw-Tooth Blade:
  • Designed specifically for use with my dovetail transfer technique.

  • Made of the same blade material as my 3/4 Dovetail Saw, .019 inch thick kerf.

  • 3/4 Saw Tooth Blade has 22 TPI so it fits into the kerf easily.
  • Allows you to "saw" a starting kerf in the pin-board.

Ingenious way to cut dovetails. Red body could be modified to hold spare blades

This piece of kit works great when you're cutting dovetails the Rob Cosman way. It's ingenious in the way you get to start the kerfs on the tailboard exactly where you need them. If you saw your pins plumb, this knife avoids you having to pair the pins with a chisel after the fact to fit the dovetails in. It goes without saying that it makes most sense to use this piece of kit with a Cosman dovetail saw with the same kerf. I also have the Shawn shim, which is very efficient to offset the kerf (though you can use a marking gauge too). One suggestion for Rob and the team would be to widen the body of the knife a bit (the red part) so that the knives that are not in use can be stored inside. Right now you can barely fit the marking knife. Especially so wow that you also provide the tooth blade for the 3/4 dovetail saw, it would be nice to be able to store them all inside the body itself when not using them. Otherwise, amazing piece of kit.
