$100 BENCH & VICE ADD-ON

In this video series Rob uses inexpensive materials to build a high-quality assembly bench, that with the addition of a Sjoberg vise it can easily be turned into a really nice workbench. The top is made of several MDF sheets glued together. This has multiple advantages: 1) MDF is completely flat so it makes a great reference surface, 2) is completely stable so it will not move with changes in humidity, 3) is very heavy so it gives a lot of mass to the bench, and 4) it is very inexpensive. The base is made from two plywood sheets that are cut into strips and glued together to make the legs and stretchers. The advantage to this method is 1) the plywood is stable and will not move with changes in humidity 2) no need to do any wood dimensioning 3) this is a very quick construction method 4) inexpensive. This bench design is so successful that Rob made a dozen of them to be used in his teaching workshop.
